Bounce and smile

Monday, September 21st, 2009

There are not many things that are guaranteed to put a smile on the face of even the glummest of glum. Many years ago in a fit of great enthusiasm I was involved in helping run Super Tramp’s stand at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition at Earls Court in London. One of the items on the stand that we were promoting and selling was a PT Bouncer rebounder (that’s one of those small circular exercise mini trampolines about one metre in diameter) We all encouraged visitors to ‘have a go’. If you have ever spent a day on your feet trudging round a big trade show or exhibition you will appreciate that as the hours go by it becomes harder and harder to raise a smile as your feet feel increasingly leaden and your limbs start to ache. You just long to take the weight off your feet. We sold this as the alternative to sitting down. It was amazing to see how this gentle, low impact, gravity defying exercise worked. Tired limbs were rejuvenated and lovely smiles lit up previously strained countenances. AND of course we smiled too as we took their orders!

If you do suffer from painful joints and the mere thought of trudging round any exhibition hall leaves you cold, do at some point try out a rebounder. This is not about energetically leaping up and down. Your feet do not need to leave the rebounder bed for you to start to benefit from this form of exercise. It is important to stay in your comfort zone. The idea being to get your body’s circulation system working without experiencing pain. This is the benefit of gentle low impact exercise. Once your lymphatic system gets going, the pain causing toxins will be removed from your joints. I know it seems hard to believe that something so simple can be so effective. You will never know until you try it.

Benefits Of Bounce

Being the enthusiast I am for all things bouncy I have ‘trampoline’ as a Google Alert. It is amazing to note that nearly everyday there is someone enthusing about the newly discovered joys and benefits of bouncing on a trampoline, mini trampoline or rebounder. This is something that you cannot just ignore… There must be something in it. Just what is it? There are numerous theories and of course even NASA did testing in the early days of space travel when researching the effects of weightlessness in space. They discovered quite by accident that bouncing really worked the body hard and was more effective than jogging. Well there are plenty of ways to workout and get the heart rate up but how many of them make you smile, are easy on the skeletal frame, don’t seem like hard work at all and use such a low cost piece of equipment? AND you don’t need to leave home or wear special clothing, just kick of your shoes, even watch TV while you bounce.

So what happens when you bounce. Well it’s combating the force of gravity that strengthens your body and makes the body work. When you bounce you move up a gear. Going up you are defying gravity. On landing you experience a force of several g’s. This happens more than once a second. This gets every single cell in your body moving. All the body’s systems are gently fired up and start to function. Lungs, heart and lymphatic system. Toxins are release from painful joints. Even your eyes get exercised. Best of all you feel better. Just don’t get carried away and over do it to start with otherwise you’ll feel exhausted! Little and often is best to start with . Just build up gently adding 10 or 20 seconds to each session each day. Once you find 20 minutes easy and exhilarating you are starting to get fit.
